Free $8+ With Google Pay

Sign up for Google Pay today and get $8 cashback when you make your first $10 transfer.

Here is a guide to finding your promo code to share with your friends.

The first part of the guide is to get you signed up and get your first $8.

The second part of the guide is to get you familiar with how to share your promo code with your friends so that you can get your subsequent $8.

Get them to download Google Pay so that both of you can get $8 from Google!

You don't have to use the app, we just want you to get that free $8 first 😉.

Part 1: Getting My First $8

Step 1: Click on the link here: https://g.co/payinvite/h12c70z

*Use your mobile phone to access the link.

**Just a disclosure, if you successfully earned your first $8 via the link above, we'll also earn an $8 reward 😉. Thank you for supporting our operations with this small gesture.

Step 2: Sign up for Google Pay and download the app

Step 3: Sign in with your Google Account, and link it to any of your bank accounts.

Step 4: Click on 'New Payment' and make a payment.

There are a few ways to do this.

Step 4A: You can send $10 to any of your friends via their PayNow, and get $8 in cashback from Google. Then ask your friends to send you back the $10 👍.

Step 4B: You can pay for something that cost $10 (or more) via Google Pay, and get the free $8 in cashback from Google.

Step 5: View your rewards

Scroll down and click on 'Rewards'.

That will show you all the cashback you have earned.

So far, all the cashbacks have been credited back to my PayNow account.

Ta-da! So Simple! 😉

Part 2: Getting My Subsequent $8
Now that you've got your account set up, time to get the next $8.

Step 1: Find your Promo Code

Scroll to the bottom and click on the 'Invite' button.

Step 2: Share your Promo Code with your friends

Yup, share the code with your friends and get them to sign up for Google Pay (let them follow Part 1, send them this website 😊).

Step 3: Ask them to transfer you $10

Yes! Ask them to transfer you $10 via Google Pay; that will earn them their first $8 cashback from Google.

And that will also earn you that $8 referral fee.

Then, of course, you should transfer the $10 back to them if you still want to keep that friendship 🤣.

You can repeat this with up to 80 friends!

*Bonus Part 3: Getting Random Cashbacks

While you use Google Pay to make these transfers to your friends or to pay for goods and services, Google is currently also paying you a little cash back.

After every purchase/transfer, go to your 'Rewards' section.

There will be a scratch card reward that you can scratch to get a random amount of cash back from your transaction.

Conclusion

Our motto is 'Free Money Just Take'!

Good things must share, so we are telling you this offer now!

And you better act fast, because the offer ends 31st December 2020!

[Credit Card] Who Pays For Your Credit Rewards?

Cashback, air miles, merchant discounts, other perks, these are the incentives that banks and credit card companies (Financial Institutions - FIs) use to attract you to apply and spend on their cards.
Every transaction you spend using these cards, merchants are charged a fee by the FIs for providing the card facility. The fees (known as interchange fee) are what the FIs earn and use to pay for your rewards.

For example, if you swipe your credit card when you buy a new laptop for $1,500 from Courts, FIs would charge Courts 2% of that money (or $30). That $30 would be used to pay for the FIs operation costs and a portion of it will be channelled back to you as rewards (either cash back or some other form). FIs also use the money from the cards' annual fees and interest for late payment to fund the rewards program.

In order to make up for the fees the FIs charge, shops often have to increase the price of their products/services in order to maintain their profit margins (or profits). That means if you are paying via cash or debit card, you are not earning any rewards AND you are paying for a higher price in order to subsidise those people who spend with credit cards.

"If you are using a debit card or cash for purchases, you are literally leaving points and money on the table. It's like throwing away money every time you use cash."

Here's a video that explains in detail how cards are earning money and giving you the rewards

So, use your credit cards wisely.
1) Always pay your monthly credit card bills on time and in full!
2) If you can, always charge any expenses you can find to your credit card
3) Avoid late fee payment and interest charges
4) Ask for an annual fee waiver if possible - although often times the waiver might result in loss of reward points or air miles.

How to get more cashback and miles out of your credit cards
How many of you have this problem where you are always wondering which credit card in your wallet will give the best rewards when you are just about to make a payment? With so many different cards available in Singapore, each with their own set of rewards, bonus categories, minimum spending requirements, and more, it can be a huge challenge to know which card will give the best rewards based on how and where we spend our money.

To help solve this problem, a team of credit card enthusiasts set up a new community-driven project WhatCard that provides a free tool to help everyone find the best credit card to use at every place.

The website is a simple search engine, so all you have to do is key in the merchant name in the search bar and it will show all the different credit cards ranked in order of rewards given, with additional filters to see cashback or miles rewards cards and also filter by category (e.g. Groceries in the screenshot). The rewards data that the team used was put together from:
  1. their own transactions,
  2. transactions from other personal finance communities like Seedly and the HWZ forum
  3. terms and conditions of the various credit cards.
The team did share that WhatCard is very much still in beta phase so you can expect more merchants (they are currently at 1,100+ merchants), functions and features to be added over time. Because it is a community-based kind of project, the more people using it and contributing to it, the better the service gets. If you find any new offers by your bank or credit card, you can contribute to this project by letting them know the offer, or you could also report any errors or share feedback and suggestions on what to include next to make this tool even more useful for the community.
We think that this is a good project built by the team as a way of supporting and giving back to the personal finance community in Singapore. It is still a beta so it is not perfect, but it is definitely good enough to use regularly and the team have proven to be really responsive in continuing to improve the product.

Spend $40 and Reach Starbucks Gold Membership

This is the young adult's symbol of status, and how much we are willing to splurge for coffee.
This Starbucks Gold Card is only available to those who spent $300 per year via their Starbucks card.
That's about $25 per month.
But fret not, here is 1 trick that I have been using for the past several years to maintain my Gold status without burning a hole in my pocket, and here's how you can too!

Most of us are trying to reach Gold status via our own effort. I applaud you for that though I think you have started to realise that you either spent too much on Starbucks or you seem to never be able to reach Gold level although you seem to drink quite a lot of their Frappucino.

The trick here is to rely on the collective effort of the people around you to help you reach that Gold (pun intended).
Here are some ways I use to reach Gold:

1. Buy Starbucks on behalf of friends and colleagues
We all have friends who once in a while wants to drink Starbucks. These are friends who are not die-hard fans but do have their cravings every once in a while.
They don't have the Starbucks card and are not in the business of collecting the stars.
Why not charge their drinks to your Starbucks card?
If 4 friends buy a Venti Frap each, that's $8.30 x 4 = $33.2 charged to your Starbucks card, you are 10% closer to Gold without spending a single dime!

Recommended Post: 5 numbers more important than your income

2. Share a Starbucks Card
Got a partner, sibling, or best friend who is a Starbucks-drinker like you?
2 heads are better than 1, or in this case, 2 person spending is better than 1.
If you can't reach the Gold on your own, find someone to support you along the way.
You can share 1 Starbucks account and charge all your Fraps to that Starbucks account via the Starbucks App.
Of course, you have to decide how you want to share that free drink you get with every 60 stars.

The last tip and I feel this is one of my best tips:
3. TREAT YOUR FRIENDS $1 OFF THEIR VENTI FRAP
Yes, treat them to $1 off the largest drink, and only the largest-sized drink.
Here's why.
The largest size Frap cost $8.30 each cup (lowest cost Frap).
If you offer a $1 discount, it will cost your friend $7.30, and you have just spent $1 to get 8.3 stars.
But there's more!
You only have to treat 7.3 friends to get 60 stars credited into your Starbucks card.
And that 60 stars entitle you to 1 free drink from Starbucks - YES! You just spent $7.30 to get an $8.30 Frap drink and chalked 60 stars to Gold (20% down!).
And so far, I have rarely seen friends that reject me when I offer or suggest to get Starbucks and give them a $1 off.
And I usually do this towards the last few months of my Gold membership when I'm still short of about 100 stars.
But assuming you did this for all 300 stars, you will reach Starbucks Gold status spending only $36.50.

There you have it, the 3 tips I use to maintain my Starbucks Gold membership year after year.
What other tips do you have for you to reach your Gold status?

An Overseas Clinic Visit Made Me Realise the Importance of Travel Insurance

This is a story of me going to a medical facility while on my America Road Trip and how lucky I felt when I knew I would be covered by travel insurance.

December 2017, I went on a road trip to the United States of America (USA) - it was during the winter period but not that it mattered anyway I guess.
I was on my way to the Grand Canyon when halfway through the bus ride there I started vomiting.
I vomited and felt uncomfortable in the stomach - it was miserable, especially since I was kind of confined to the single bus seat.
Every time there was a break, I would either remain on my seat to rest (if I'm lucky) or I would alight to empty the vomit bag, get a new one, then proceed to vomit more in the toilet (I have no idea how I got so much stuff to puke as well).

By the time I reached the Grand Canyon Lodge, I was half dead.
I alighted the bus and warmed myself in the Lodge.
After a while, I gave up! I felt too miserable that I booked a cab via the reception to drive me to the Grand Canyon Clinic - yes they do have a medical clinic there.

Recommended Post: Is Whole Life Insurance A Scam?

I got myself checked into the clinic and waited about 45 minutes before any medical personnel could attend to me.
Once it was my turn, I was put on IV (intravenous therapy) aka tubes carrying liquid poked into my veins to transfer liquid substances into my body.
Then I had tubes carrying oxygen put into my nose so that I had air going into my body.
Apparently, the nurse said that I was experiencing altitude sickness - more about it HERE
This was how I looked like while lying on the clinic's bed

After 1.5hours of being on IV and given oxygen, I was discharged from the clinic with some medication and isotonic drink.
The bill turns out to be USD 376.12 - which translate to about SGD $500+
Honestly, that was a big bomb! That 2.5 hours visit wiped out nearly 10% of my road trip's budget!
I knew seeing a doctor in America was expensive, I just did not expect it to be this expensive!
At that moment of paying the bill, I was so glad that I actually bought travel insurance!
If I didn't have insurance, I'll probably wait until I was near death before I would go see a doctor because it is just too expensive!
A $100+ in travel insurance cost ended up saving me $400 in medical cost and nearly dying - quite worth it!

I remember going to Taiwan last time with my friends and they had food poisoning. We too went to visit their hospital and good thing they had travel insurance to cover their visit. It is a good thing I was not the who got the food poisoning as I did not buy insurance back then because I did not think I will need it.
So, it turns out it is really easy to fall sick while overseas - so buy travel insurance!
It saves lives!

So many styles but which style?!

As times change, the markets change together with it as well. This is due to the forces that shape human behavior have changed and influences how people interact in the markets. From fundamental analysis to technical analysis, to leveraged trading such as contra trading, to computerised trading such as quant trading. With so many trading strategies and techniques in play, the question now is: Which is the one that is most profitable?

While most people are pre-occupied with just profits, it is far more important to know which trading style is suitable for your personality and risk tolerance. If you are comfortable using a strategy and are disciplined enough to stick to it, trading success will also follow.

Hence, the first step is to find your winning strategy. Getting to know all the various strategies, their advantages and risks. It is important to obtain and read as much resources as possible to widen the possible trading or investing tools that you can use to enhance your trading style. It can be through books, online resources, seminars or even through back-testing of your own formulated strategy. It could also be the case where not just 1 strategy is suitable, but rather a hybrid of 2 or more. Personally, I use fundamental analysis to identify potential investment options with viable target prices while using technical analysis to better time my entry and exit points.

Exclusively for our readers, we are glad to broadcast that ShareInvestors will be having a seminar by Ronald K, who is a self-made millionaire in the Stock Market. He will be introducing the Contra Squeezing strategies and trading using tick charts. Tick charts are just another way of presenting trading prices in charts, similar to line and candle charts. This is up to the preference of the traders using it as different charting styles present and focus on data differently. Ronald will also be introducing a risk management plan that is specifically for the Contra Trades.

Remember: Wealth is not about the money, it is about the options that it gives. Having more options to earn money will then generate more wealth.

WOOFR is your lifestyle passport. Within a few taps on your smartphones, we bring you instant bookings and exclusive deals to your favourite clubs, bars and music events.

What inspired this business idea?
I’ve travelled regularly as a DJ, and I’ve seen so many pain-points in the nightlife space. It’s such a hassle for tourists to discover the best nightlife spots, and the language barrier makes it even harder to book a table or purchase tickets to the venue.
Nightlife venues themselves are still running on traditional methods of reservations (pen and paper), and they are unable to retain data analytics of their consumers such as the name, age, nationality and spending history.

ShopBack: Save with Coupons, CashBack and more!

While I was googling for alternatives to reduce my expenses, I realised that apart from reducing takeout and preparing my own meals, there was an on-going trend of online retailers dealing in all kinds of products. They vary from groceries to mass e-retailer Amazon. With the introduction of these e-retailers, consumers now enjoy an additional option when it comes to shopping! The fierce competition between these new entries and the old brick-and-mortar retail stores have resulted in lower prices - this only stands to benefit consumers! Furthermore, these new entries also periodically give out coupons or hold one-off sales event to attract shoppers.

One of the ways that I found was to shop through websites that provide promotions, discounts, and other perks. One startup that particularly caught my attention was ShopBack and the services they offer. What caught my eye about them was:
  1. Cash back on most online purchases
  2. Discounts on products from a range of retailers
  3. Best deals in town for the products you are looking for
The most interesting part about it is that ShopBack offers not just cash backs on item purchases (clothes or electronics on sites like Taobao) but also on travel purchases and food purchases e.g. food delivery and groceries.

Shopback uses the commissions it derive from the retailers it helped referred to provide these great bargains to consumers. While these rebates range from product to product, they do help consumers save a considerable amount of money. You can even double down on the benefits by paying via your credit card, earning rewards from both ShopBack and the financial institutions!

ShopBack however, is not all about cash back. There’s a whole depository of information of great offers and deals here at ShopBack and these deals range from categories like promotions on electronic products and dining deals to seasonal sales event.

Hence, besides the norm of complimenting credit card promotions and store promotions, here are the new 3 rules of augmenting the upcoming online trend:

1. ALWAYS google search for Coupons or Promo Codes

There are numerous sites that collate free coupons or promo codes for potential customers to save more on their purchases. Credit card newsletters may also now send you an email to notify you on their upcoming joint effort with online stores. An example was OCBC, where they would sometimes work with Zalora and offer further discounts which you can use if you happened to have an OCBC credit/debit card. You can also find a coupon code on a whole host of online retailers at ShopBack that allows you to benefit from transactions for things like travel at Agoda or groceries at HonestBee.

2. Go for Group-Buy
More often than not, online stores offer group discounts. This is if you buy more than 1 items, there will usually be a bulk purchase discount. You may then relate this to the concept of Groupon. Many other individual sites also offer their own kind of similar sale whereby if you buy more of the same items, there will be a slight discount in terms of per-unit purchase.

3. Stack on Credit Card Discounts

As I said previously, banks and financial institutions are now working in tandem with online stores to offer greater savings for their customers. This might come as a regular promotion or an attempt to increase the use of their credit/debit card. This would often be stackable with other vendor promotions.

At the end of all this, we hope that this would be able to help our readers achieve their financial goals through savings and cashback.

Hu Li Yang's Half by Half Theory

Hu Li Yang's theory:
1) If an index's price drops by 50% from its peak, it has entered an "fair value" price point
2) If an index's price drops to around 25% from its peak, it has entered a "extremely undervalue" price point
3) When recovering from the bottom, the index will always face selling pressure at 2x the bottom price
4) During a bear market rebound, you can forget about fundamentals and enjoy the collective rising stock prices.

High Frequency Trading the Next Big Thing?

As the age of internet dawn on us, we would expect the financial markets to become more transparent, more efficient, and provide a level playing field for all investors/traders.
However, actual reality is the opposite: markets are not much more transparent than they used to be, and increasingly, we are being pitted against computers, or more specifically: High-Frequency Traders!

High-frequency traders use the internet to carry out high-frequency trading: using a complex algorithm to search the whole financial markets and trade a large number of securities in matters of seconds.
High-frequency trading is usually employed by large institutions and funds, and they pose as an unfair advantage against small investors because most trading opportunities that you find, the computer might make a move ahead of you and pocket that gain for its trader.

Despite the odds being stacked against small investors, there is still room for investors/traders to make money in the stock market. You can still invest before the computer makes its move or use techniques to spot trends, advanced techniques that the computers are unable to comprehend efficiently in its algorithm!

What to Invest Going into 2017?

As we come near to the end of 2016, we should start questioning our investment strategy for next year. Some of the questions you should be thinking about are below:

1) What to invest in ahead of the US election on November 8?
2) How to position my portfolio for the US election and post-US election?
3) What to invest in if Hillary Clinton wins?
4) What to invest in if Donald Trump wins?
5) What to invest in Singapore for the year 2017?

If any one of these questions is one of your concern, is it time for you to join the following seminar and listen to some of the financial industry's experts about their views for 2017!

Similar to how other streaming services work
You sign up for a monthly subscription with CatchPlay (Movie Lover plan), and you get to watch an unlimited amount of movies available in their 'Movie Lovers Unlimited' library (they update their movie library every week).
While the vast majority of its movies are available under this plan, some movies (the new or hot ones usually) might not be available for streaming and only available under 1-time rental.
As such, this plan comes with a feature that allows you to watch 1 rental movie for free every month!
What movies are under rental? Check them out under the "Hot Picks" section!

1-Time Rental (Movie Fan Plan: Free)
Don't watch movies very often on these services to make it worth your money?
CatchPlay also comes with a 1-time rental of movies.
Just browse their website, and if you see any movies you like, just rent it!
Yes - it is just that simple!
Rental of 1 movie is either $3.50 or $6.00.
Also, part of this 'plan' is, you get to watch 1 free movie every month from their selected list of movies! Ain't that great!
